The Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development says four major development projects aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving urban infrastructure in Kandy will be completed within the next two years.
The projects include the Getambe Flyover, Mahaiyawa Underpass, William Gopallawa Mawatha expansion, and Louis Peiris Mawatha development, implemented under the Central Province Development Programme.
A field inspection of the projects was carried out on July 15 by Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation K.D. Lalkantha and Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways Dr. Prasanna Gunasena.
The Getambe Flyover project, which resumed in February 2025 after being delayed due to political, administrative, and financial issues, is expected to ease heavy traffic on the Peradeniya–Kandy and Gannoruwa–Kandy roads.
The Ministry said the projects are progressing under a strategic plan and are expected to significantly improve traffic flow and urban mobility in Kandy.
