75th Bellanwila Esala Perahera to Take Place from August 15–17

The Bellanwila Raja Maha Viharaya has announced that all arrangements are in place for the 75th annual Bellanwila Esala Perahera, which will be held from August 15 to 17.

This announcement was made by the Chief Incumbent of the Viharaya, Venerable Boralesgamuwe Premarathana Thero, during a special media briefing held at the Department of Government Information on August 6.

The Perahera will officially commence on the evening of August 6 with the traditional Kapa planting ceremony at the temple premises. This sacred ritual marks the beginning of the Perahera festivities and is an important aspect of Buddhist cultural traditions.

This year’s Perahera will feature a vibrant procession that includes both traditional and modern dance troupes, decorated elephants, and the sacred relic casket carried on the temple’s majestic wedding elephant. Processions representing the devalayas (shrines) dedicated to the four guardian deities will also take part in this grand cultural and religious celebration.

Venerable Premarathana Thero emphasized that the Perahera is being organized with the intention of invoking blessings for the entire country. It is a significant religious and cultural event that attracts thousands of devotees and spectators each year, showcasing Sri Lanka’s rich heritage.

To facilitate the smooth conduct of the Perahera, several traffic arrangements will be implemented. On the days of the procession, the following roads will be closed from 8:00 p.m.: the Ratmalana–Nugegoda road from Athidiya, the Dehiwala–Maharagama road from the Nedimala junction and from Malani Bulathsinhala Mawatha, and the Nugegoda–Ratmalana road from the Papiliyana junction. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes during this time to avoid inconvenience.

In addition to the procession, a special commemorative postage stamp will be issued on August 14 to mark the 75th anniversary of the Perahera. The stamp will be officially released under the patronage of the Minister of Health and Mass Media, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa.

The Bellanwila Esala Perahera is one of the most revered cultural events in the country and continues to preserve and promote Buddhist traditions while uniting communities in prayer and celebration.
