Without Social Discipline, the Future Generation Cannot Be Guided onto the Right Path” – Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage

Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Sunil Kumara Gamage emphasized the importance of self-discipline and social discipline in protecting young people from tobacco use while addressing the National World No Tobacco Day 2026 event held at Taj Samudra.

The event was organized by the National Authority on Tobacco and Alcohol (NATA) under the leadership of its Chairman, Ananda Rathnayake.

Minister Gamage stated that guiding future generations away from tobacco and alcohol is a shared responsibility and urged the public to help loved ones overcome harmful addictions.

Deputy Minister of Health and Media Hansaka Wijemuni reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to creating a “Tobacco-Free Generation,” stressing the need to prevent youth from taking up smoking and nicotine products.

The event was attended by Memo Takeuchi of the World Health Organization, alongside health officials and distinguished guests.
